Today, let’s talk about wool felt, so we can make clear how special our new greenGEAR wool felt phone cases are. 100% wool felt is a great material for electronics applications because it is durable, moisture-absorbing and heat-resistant, but it is also extremely soft and beautiful to look at. The reason that you don’t see more of it is that it takes some skill to work with. To explain what felt is, we asked our felt manufacturer for a description of their process, and this is what they told us:

Wool felt is made from agitating wool to create a non-woven fabric. The wool shaft has scales which interlock and form a fabric through felting. Because felt is non-woven, it will not unravel and the edges do not need to be finished. When cooled, dried and compressed, the scales close and lock the wool into the tough, durable material we call felt. 100% wool has many advantages, the most important being that it holds up to wear and reasonable stress along it’s seams without giving way. It also will not pill, it has a slight elasticity, and takes the proper dyes and tints easily.

Isn’t that terrific? We use a 100% sheep wool exterior in our felt cases, both because synthetic felts have a tendency to wrinkle and flatten, making them less attractive, and also because using real wool lets us utilize completely renewable resources to manufacture these cases. We use a cotton lining and cotton thread to stitch greenGEAR cases together, and the button for the wrist strap is carved from renewable bamboo. Add it all together, and you have super-cute, highly functional cases that are totally renewable – you basic win-win for our customers. Over the past year and a half, foneGEAR has done an OK, not great job of maintaining this blog and keeping our customers appraised of new products.

Scratch that.

Over the past year and a half, foneGEAR has not done a great job of maintaining this blog. We have not been quick enough to point out new products that would be of use to our customers. We have certainly not done enough to promote the idea that we are the most interesting and progressive accessory company around, with a wealth of interesting licensed products to choose from and our new line of greenGEAR cases.

The good news is that things are about to get much better, both in terms of our own marketing and promotion online, and in terms of rapidly advancing new products that will be of direct benefit to our customers. We are very excited that our new greenGEAR 100% wool felt cases are available for pre-sale today on our web site. We are even more excited that later this month we will begin pre-selling accessories licensed by the biggest group of all time, The Beatles. This is a remarkable product line that will feature CD cases, camera bags, phone cases, notebook computer sleeves, and real guitar bags, as well as bags to fit the guitars used to play Rock Band: The Beatles, which is arriving in stores in September.

There are a lot of interesting, exciting things happening for our company, our customers and our products, so stay tuned. The rest of 2009 is going to be a bit of a ride.

SanDisk to release ’slotMusic’

SanDisk and four major music companies have teamed up to announce a new music format called ‘slotMusic.’

SlotMusic will be a compact memory card that already contains a music album plus extras. They will be able to be played on cell phones, PCS and some portable MP3 players. It will be introduced into stores like Wal-Mart and Best-Buy in mid October.

Fitbit Tracks Your Exercise!

FitBit is a small personal tracker that is designed to be worn or carried around in a spare pocket. The device is about the size of a standard flash drive and includes a built-in motion sensor. The Fitbit tracks exercise intensity levels, calories burned, sleep quality, steps and distance traveled.

The Fitbit will be coming late Decemeber / early January and will be sold for $99. This is the perfect device to compliment your New Year’s Resolution! Keep an eye out!

Best Buy Vending Machines!

Best Buy is putting their products in vending machines and setting them up in the nation’s airports. The vending machine items will include things such as chargers and travel adapters as well as impulse friendly gadgets such as cell phones and headphones.

These vending machines are scheduled to open September 1 in the following cities: Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Minneapolis and San Francisco.
